Tips for Going to a Pick Your Own Orchard

Tips for Going to a Pick Your Own Orchard- Heading to a U-Pick farm? Make sure you check out these tips before you go to make the most of your trip!

I feel incredibly lucky to live where I do near an entire community that is solely geared towards pick your own food, sometimes called U-Pick farms. Located just outside of Spokane, WA, where I live is a place called Green Bluff. Green bluff is a cluster of farms that are open to the public and they are almost operational all year round other than the coldest months when nothing is growing. There are even a couple of Christmas Tree farms there for the holiday season.

Washington is generally known for two very specific fruits; apples and cherries of the Rainer variety. My family loves both and with Green Bluff being so close, we can get them for a very cheap price. When cherries across the country were sometimes $5-$6 a pound, I was picking my own for $1.75 a pound for organic! Not only is a U-Pick farm a great place to get produce at heavy discounts and from local small farmers, it is also a great way to spend an afternoon with your family and happens to be a pretty awesome date, too. If you are thinking of heading to a U-pick farm this fall to get gourds, apples, or even things like broccoli, here are some tips for going to a pick your own orchard.

Tips for Going to a Pick Your Own Orchard

Call ahead of time- Many U-Pick orchards have websites that list hours, but you should know that generally speaking, these hours are very lose. Keep in mind that these farms are often run by a single family and if there is a family issue that needs to be taken care of, that could close the farm for the day or a couple of hours. Rain and inclement weather can as well. And often, they simply don’t have time to update their websites with correct info as things change. Always call ahead to find out exact hours that day. Not only will this keep you in the loop, but it lets them know to expect you as well.

Ask around and find out which farms are the best- Ask friends, family and locals where the best farms are. Not all of them will accommodate your needs. I have been to farms that were more expensive than others and so bare bones they didn’t even have a way to get a drink should I need one after a day of picking. Get recommendations from folks to find the best farms that are the most accommodating. Ask what other things they have on site. Some farms have petting zoos, gift shops and even restaurants!

Be a good visitor- Ask questions if you have them and don’t just assume you can do something. Listen to all the rules they lay out for you. Many times, there will be certain rows of trees that are not OK to pick from even though you think they should be. Also, while most farms don’t mind if you sample the good while you pick, asking is always welcomed and stick to just a sample and not more.

Teach your children how to pick properly- Kids tend to just grab and pull and this can lead to damage to bushes and trees that may end up causing serious issues. It also can cause you to lose some of your picked goods because they got ruined in the process. If you aren’t sure how to do it yourself, ask.

Have a plan for everything you pick- One of the biggest issues we face when we go picking is potentially picking too much and having things go to waste. Before you go out, look up some seasonal recipes as well as how to freeze and preserve your bounty should you end up with more than you need immediately.

Ask what else they have to offer- Often, farms do different things for different seasons. One of our favorite spots to get cherries in July does peaches in August and September. If you find an orchard you like, why not come back for something different?

Why Every Green Blogger Should Attend ShiftCon 2016

Why Every Green Blogger Should Attend ShiftCon 2016- Green bloggers unite at this fun and information packed weekend in New Orleans for ShiftCon 2016!
Disclaimer: This is sponsored content. Although this content is sponsored, I am writing my own thoughts and opinions and ShiftCon has not told me what to say.

I’m just going to come out and say it; there is an overwhelming amount of blogging conferences out there. While most of them have some pretty wild guest speakers and lots of attendees and glamorous events going on, I have always had my eye on one specific event: ShiftCon.

Now, while this may be because I am in the niche of a green and healthy living bloggers, and let’s face it, as a green and healthy living blogger, we have our work cut out for us. After all, changing the world and creating discussions on hard hitting topics of the environment can present itself to be quite a challenge. On top of that, it has been my experience that us green bloggers often find that we sometimes just don’t fit a lot of the mainstream ideas, campaigns and projects as others do. So, if you are new to blogging in the greenosphere, or you are trying to decide on a conference to attend very soon, here are my thoughts on why every green blogger should attend ShiftCon 2016 on December 1, 2 and 3rd! (and check out the bottom of this post for a ShiftCon 2016 Discount Code!)

Why Every Blogger Should Attend ShiftCon 2016

You will get to meet bloggers in your niche on a larger scale- Green bloggers come in all levels. This means some bloggers like myself are mid-shade green, meaning I am not huge on pressing green living as a rigid thing, but more of a thing we could all take steps to do for what we are passionate about and bloggers that might be new to green living. Either way, you won’t have to wade through a crowd of thousands to find someone in your niche.

JP Sears will be there- If you haven’t watched any of JP Sear’s videos, you definitely should. He is absolutely hilarious and I am so excited to get the chance to hear him talk as well as meet him.

There is a great expo just for bloggers like us- When wading through companies and opportunities in the blogosphere, it can often feel like there isn’t much of a way for us to connect with the companies we want to for ourselves and our audience. At ShiftCon, the entire expo is geared towards green and healthy living companies and you are sure to pick up some great connections with brands that are like-minded.

You will learn from industry leaders on issues that are important for you and your readers- ShiftCon’s entire agenda is about bloggers and green living. That means that you will have an entire conference packed full of valuable information to spark ideas and conversations within your niche and on your blog as well as learn some things that can help you advance your business. I am most excited to learn more about videos and how to use them to build my brand as well as food trends.

It’s in New Orleans- I am so excited to be going to New Orleans. The city is full of rich history and with three days there, I will have plenty of time to explore it. The conference is to be held at the Hilton New Orleans Riverside. More location information can be found on ShiftCon’s website.

There are fitness events- Yoga is a big thing for me and ShiftCon has a yoga session on one of the mornings as well as another fitness event planned for another.

I have a ShiftCon 2016 discount code to offer my readers-Are you as excited as I am about attending ShiftCon 2016? I have a code you can use to get $50 off your blogger conference pass. Just go to register for ShiftCon and use the code VSAVEDBYGRACE .

6 Ways to Have an Eco-Friendly Wedding

6 Ways to Have and Eco Friendly Wedding- Tips for throwing the green wedding of your dreams and ideas to create a special day Mother Nature will rejoice in.

When I got married in 2009, I admit I wasn’t as ‘green’ as I am now. My green lifestyle changes have been a journey for me and I was in the baby steps portion of it at that point. I didn’t even think of doing things in a more Eco-friendly way at the time. I didn’t have a super expensive wedding, as my dress was only $150, but looking back, I did do some things that are definitely more Eco-friendly than I give myself credit for and they were more so I could be frugal than environmentally sustainable. If you are thinking of throwing a wedding that mother nature would smile down on, here are some ways to have an Eco-friendly wedding to remember!

6 Ways to Have an Eco-friendly Wedding

Buy some things used for your wedding- I had a used dress for my wedding and that was something that was not only green, but frugal. I went to a store that specifically sells dresses on consignment and bought it at a huge discount. You could also look on sites like Craigslist as well for a dress. If you are lucky enough, your mom may even let you wear hers! My reasoning for doing this, even though the idea is off-putting to some is, why spend all that money on a dress you will only wear once? You could also buy some decorations used as well. This was something I saved money on.

Send invites on recycled paper- There are so many ways to send invitations now and while some may say that sending digitally is the most green, I am a bit old fashioned myself and love sending snail mail. There are a couple of reasons this is good, even for an Eco-friendly wedding; it gives your guests something to remember your special day and allows for something more permanent to be sent as a reminder. Snail mail invites don’t have to be wasteful of paper resources, either. Basic Invite, a site that helps you create your own custom wedding invites (and even sends you a paper copy printout sample upon request for free!) has a couple of Eco-friendly options such as their Premium Semi-Gloss that is FSC Certified and 50% recycled material. And, you get free peel and seal envelopes with most orders (trust me, you want them!).

Order in season organic flowers- Just like produce, flower types have a season and one of the best ways to keep things as local and Eco-friendly as possible for your wedding is to buy flowers that are in season rather than have a specific type shipped in. If you aren’t sure what will be in season when you are planning your big date, call around the local florists and they can tell you. Also, ask if they have any organic flowers available. Another option is to plan a wedding around a time when flowers you grow would be in bloom so you can grow your own bouquet!

Plan your menu around in season local ingredients- Buying local and in season is one of the biggest ways you can go green on your wedding day for your meal. The least amount of distance from field to you will save on gas as well as you being sure everything is as fresh as it can be.

Have fun with favors and decorations- There are lots of great resources for free wedding printables on Basic Invite. If you use your own recycled paper, you can keep thing Eco-friendly, too. One idea for a fun Eco-friendly favor is to make or buy seed pods that can be planted by your guests at their own homes.

Decorate with thrift or earth elements- Having an outdoor wedding often allows you more freedom in choice of decor. If you will be having it in an area near woods, take some elements from the area to decorate and create centerpieces with. Be sure not to steal from the environment, though. For instance, a nice centerpiece could be made with fallen branches from an evergreen tree, but don’t cut any off to create your look. Use thrifted goods or simple things most people might throw away for decor as well. For instance, a can that has had the labels removed and a couple of holes punches in it would make a lovely rustic tealight candle lantern.

Low Fat Protein Rich Chicken Salad Sandwich Wraps #NewComfortFood

High Protein low fat chicken salad sandwich wraps

I have teenagers. Currently, just one lives here, yet it seems that with everyone’s schedule we rarely get a chance to have a family meal since we are all going different directions all at once. For me, this means any meals I do make when we happen to all be here have to be fast, healthy and of course, delicious. Since I am on a protein rich diet due to diabetes as well as my workout schedule, I am always trying to alter recipes to make them higher in protein and lower in fat and carbs and we are a family of comfort food lovers, so this can present itself to be quite a challenge. That’s when I came up with this idea for chicken salad sandwich wraps in lettuce.

I also love to cook seasonally, so since it is fall in Washington state where I live, apples are obviously my first pick for something seasonal. What better way to use them than to make delicious chicken salad?

simply raised chicken

Our family eats a lot of chicken since it’s a lean source of protein and I am always on the lookout for a brand that I can trust that also fits my personal values and is, of course, affordable. I love that Foster Farms has a new line of chicken called Foster Farms Simply Raised Fresh Chicken that is American Humane Certified, all-natural with no antibiotics ever and is farmed right here in the Pacific Northwest and CA. And since they partner with local farmers, I know that the chicken was brought to the store within 48 hours so it’s fresh.

As I said before, meal times are often hard for us to get together for, especially dinner, but we can usually get lunch in, at least on the weekends, so this low fat, protein-rich chicken salad sandwich wrap is the perfect thing to make in a flash. I changed things up a bit and substituted plain Greek yogurt instead of mayo, almonds instead of walnuts (for cost as well as being higher in protein) and added pears in for a little bit of extra sweetness. I also skipped the bread and opted for lettuce.

One tip: If you want to make this even faster, cook (poach) and cut your chicken ahead of time. I often keep some on hand in my fridge for quick meals such as this and cook large batches on the weekends to freeze and refrigerate for later.
