Women and men have been doing at home beauty rescues and secrets for many years. The 50’s especially were a time of beauty hacks and using things like hemorrhoid cream to get rid of under eye puffiness. You probably have many things in your home right now that can help you with some of your most troubling issues that you struggle to find the right product to help you with. Instead of spending all that hard-earned money on products that may or may not work, check out these simple and weird beauty hacks that people have been using for years.
7 “Weird” Beauty Tips you Should Try
Remove Buildup and Bring Back Shine with Beer in your Hair:
You can actually remove residue in your hair from products and shampoos with a good beer rinse. It can also bring back shine to your locs! You will need flat beer, so open one up and let it sit out for a day. To do this, just wash your hair as normal. Then, near the end of your shower time, put your head back and slowly pour the beer over your scalp and hair. Leave it there for just a few minutes, then rinse out with cool water. If you are worried about the smell, follow it up with a good spritz from some essential oil after your shower.
Shaving your Face:
Yes, I said it. While many women think shaving is just for men, some women do actually full on shave their faces. In fact, it has been a model secret for years so the model’s faces look flawless in photographs. While many women pluck those few stray hairs they get on their upper lip or chin once in a while, there are benefits to shaving as well.
Did you ever notice that men tend to have more youthful looking skin into their aging years? This is directly related to shaving on a regular basis in many cases. Think about it. When men shave, they are not only removing hair, but dead skin cells as well. So, each time they shave, they are doing a major job at exfoliating! And don’t worry, it’s a myth that more hair will grow.
Skipping a day or two of shampooing:
It’s no secret that the No Poo movement is getting bigger. No Poo simply means no shampoo. While some people find not using shampoo at all unhygienic, it can actually be good for your hair and scalp to skip a day or two of shampooing. When you use shampoo, you are not only washing the bad stuff out of your hair (pollutants, styling products, spit up from Junior…) but the good oils that keep it shiny and soft. You also may be putting a chemical buildup on your hair by shampooing too often.
Skip a day or two and see how you feel.
Use potatoes to calm puffy eyes:
A simple trick to calm down any morning puffiness is to use raw potatoes. To do this one, refrigerate a potato for the best results. Then, simply cut in half and place over your eyes. You can do slices if it’s easier similar to how people use cucumbers.
Use Diaper Rash Cream to Clear up skin irritations:
Before I had a breast reduction, I would get heat rashes in that area that were very painful. With my big girl thighs, I often get rashes from chafing skin when I exercise as well. One trick I use to clear it up is diaper rash cream. I know it sounds silly, but it works even on the most painful, raw skin almost overnight. I would imagine that it would work on just about any skin irritation that is from the bad combo from moisture and rubbing.
Use Lemon to Lighten your Hair:
This one has been going around since I was a teenager and probably before that. It actually does work! Just put some on your locks before you head out into the sun. Don’t expect your brown hair to go beach blonde or anything, but it will certainly speed up the lightening that already takes place in the sun.
Use a T-Shirt to dry your Hair for less frizz:
I have been doing this for years with my locs, but it’s also a good one to do if you have hair that is prone to fly-aways and frizz. The t-shirt absorbs well if you wring your hair out first and it creates less friction when drying so it keeps the puffiness down.
What “weird” beauty trick do you swear by?
olive oil in virtually everything!
mix it in your body lotion- your skin glows and it gets fed with all the goodies that evoo has;
eye make-up remover- not irritating- great lash conditioner;
fab for a deep conditioner for hair, do the ends, work it up, twist up and let sit for at least 20 minutes, shampoo out, light conditioner, silky hair for days!
Wonderful tips Adonna! I will have to give some of them a try!
