Many people re-gift at Christmas time. I am not sure I have ever gotten a re-gifted item, but I will admit, I have been guilty of doing it a time or two. I don’t remember where I got this one candle from, but several years back, I re-gifted it to someone else. It wasn’t because I don’t like candles (I love them in a crazy way!), it was more that the scent wasn’t one I liked and the colors didn’t match my decor. I do admit, I felt bad about this re-gift. I did love the thought of the person who gave it to me, but I just thought since it wouldn’t really be used by me, I should give it to someone else who might.
You may be surprised who re-gifts and what is re-gifted. I know I laughed and raised a few eyebrows when I read the survey that Bookoo conducted. Bookoo is an online yard sale site that allows neighbors to connect with neighbors and sell their items.
In the 2010 survey, featuring both men and women over age 21, Bookoo found:
92% of people polled said they said re-gifting was acceptable (so don’t feel too bad if you do!)
Women are the primary re-gifters with a ratio of 3:1 over men.
The most commonly re-gifted items are books, antiques and home decor.
The biggest reason people re-gift? They think the next person would like the item more.
I laughed when I read the strangest re-gifted items found on the survey. Take a look at this:
~Two-year-old fruitcake
~False teeth
~Toys with broken pieces
~Box of chocolates with bites taken out of several pieces
~Outdated desk calendar
Do you plan to re-gift this year? Have you ever gotten a gift that you suspected was re-gifted to you? Tell me in the comments! I would love to hear about it!
