What kid doesn’t like playdough? Although parents often don’t like to let their kids play with it because of the mess factor, playdough is a great toy to spark creativity and great for helping with sensory issues (try putting it in a Ziploc baggie). Did you know you can make your own at home using ingredients you probably already have? This homemade playdough recipe is so simple and its great fun to make with your kids since there are so many parts of it that are so easy.
To make homemade playdough you will need:
1 1/2 cups flour
3/4 cups salt
3 tsp cream of tarter
1 tbsp vegetable oil
1 1/4 cup water
something to dye it-food coloring or koolaid
glitter if you desire-extra fine works best
1. Mix flour, water, cream of tater, salt and vegetable oil together in a bowl.
2. Divide into 4 bowls or dishes. Add food coloring or koolaid and mix well.
3. When well mixed, add glitter.
4. Put in a pot on medium heat. Using a rubber spatula, work the dough by flipping it and stirring it. In a short time, it will pull away from the sides. Pull it out and finish incorporating by hand. It shouldn’t be too hot. When you are ready for the next color, simply wipe out the pot and follow the steps again.
This homemade playdough should last 3-4 weeks. Keep it in an airtight container or plastic baggie. It should not stain hands or clothing. If you find that it is hardening, just add a couple drops of water to get it back to the right consistency. If left out, it will harden, so if you want to keep a shape, just let it air dry!
Have fun 😉
