Score a free ticket to the Hunger Games: #CatchingFire

covergirlhungergames

This post is NOT in any way sponsored or endorsed by Covergirl or Lionsgate entertainment.

If you are like a huge portion of the country, you are looking forward to seeing the Hunger Games movie, “Catching Fire” that just hit the theaters. Did you know you can score a free ticket to the Hunger Games: Catching Fire just by purchasing some of your favorite CoverGirl products?

I did it and here is how:

Go to any participating retailer (I chose Walgreen’s) and buy $20 worth of Covergirl products. This is the pre-sales tax price. Then head over to the Covergirl website to see how you can mail in a form (but, really, who has time for all that?) or simply email a picture of your receipt to them for a code that will give you a free pass to the movie at participating theaters.

What’s more, if you shop at Walgreen’s, you could almost do it for free. I did it with just $13.89 including tax. My total before discounts and coupons was $26.33. I had coupons for $4.00 off two Covergirl Eye products from the Sunday inserts last week and this week, Covergirl cosmetics are Buy 1, Get 1 50% off at most locations. I also had some Walgreen’s Balance Rewards. (Those things really come in handy at times like these!)

So, while my savings was not that phenomenal, and I did pay almost what I would for a ticket, anyways, I got makeup that will make awesome stocking stuffers as well as a ticket.

Head on over to Walgreen’s (or another participating retailer) and take advantage of this amazing deal. It only goes until 12/31 and you want to make sure you see the movie before then! I plan on taking my daughter to it as soon as I am able. She has been dying to see this since she heard about it as she has read all the books.

For more information on this amazing deal, make sure to check out the Covergirl website for more details such as terms and conditions.

Smart Buys & Things to Skip on Amazon

Smart Buys and Things To Skip on Amazon

Amazon is a great place to shop online as it offers virtually any and everything you could ever want, need and even desire. There are some things on Amazon that are amazing deals and others that are really better bought somewhere else. Don’t give up on brick and mortar stores just yet! Here is a sampling of some of the best and worst stuff to buy on Amazon.

Smart Buy and Things to Skip on Amazon

Smart Buys:

Books and E-Books. Not only can you often get free e-books, but you can get very low priced physical books as well. I have seen hundreds of books priced at a penny before. And shipping is often just a couple dollars so for a used book in great condition, you can get it for 75-90% off the cover price on Amazon. If you are looking for free e books, make sure to check out my weekly updated Free E-Book posts.

Diapers. You can buy “open box” diapers at great discounts on Amazon. These are boxes of diapers that were opened on accident or damaged but are still in usable condition. They are not something you can always find as it is just chance that they are posted, but since they are on there frequently keep an eye out and snatch them up quickly as they tend to go fast when they are posted. Finding them is as simple as filtering results. Simply search with the key words “Open box diapers”. Be willing to change brands though as you won’t necessarily get the brand you were looking for every time.

Gluten free and specialty foods. You will find a way bigger selection of specialty foods, such as Gluten Free Baking Mix on Amazon than at any local grocery store. The buys are usually in bulk, though, so be sure you can use them up in time.

Auto Parts. Amazon has a section called “Auto Shop” and you can find nearly every part you would need for a car including aftermarket and used parts that are hard to find. You will usually get them much cheaper than your mechanic will charge you for them and then you will only have to pay for the labor portion of your repair after you buy what you need. For instance, this FRAM Air filter would be twice this price or more if you asked to have it changed at your next oil change.

Things to Skip:

Cleaning supplies. These might seem like a great deal, especially if you subscribe to them through Amazon prime, but if you look at the unit price, they are strangely way over priced even with free 2-day shipping. You are better off couponing for them at your local store.

Regular groceries. Not only will you not get the freshest if it is perishable, but since everything is on bulk, you will get trapped into buying more than you will probably reasonably use.

Home Furnishings and tools- Furniture is something that is best bought after seeing in person and while the deals can be OK on Amazon regarding furniture, you won’t know if you truly like it until you have seen it or put it together and it can be nearly impossible to return. Tools, like furniture, is something you should examine with your eyes before you buy so you know if it is exactly what you need for the job.

Single movies or episodes of TV Shows. If you are just going to buy one here and there, it can add up really fast and you might be better off buying the entire season of a favorite TV show or subscribing to Netflix. Amazon Prime does allow you to do a streaming service, but it only allows you to pay by the year. With Amazon Prime, you can also get free 2 day shipping on most Amazon shipped products as a bonus! Get a free 30 day trial just for signing up.

What is your favorite thing to buy on Amazon? Where have you gone wrong with a purchase? Let me know in the comments!

Tips for Buying Clothing at Thrift Stores

tips for buying clothing at thrift stores

There are all kinds of deals that abound when you walk into a thrift store. You can get great deals on books, home decor and of course, furniture. One of the best deals is clothing, though, and most Thrift Stores have an over-abundance of it. It may seem simple when it comes to purchasing clothes at a thrift store, but there are some special things to take into consideration when buying clothing second hand. Here are some tips for buying clothes from a 2nd hand store.

Tips for Buying Clothing at Thrift Stores

Always try them on. Being that these clothes are used, they could be stretched out away from the original size due to wear of the previous owner. Just because something says a size 10 doesn’t mean it is. There is also a big difference between the vast brands available, so to make sure it fits, try it on.

Know the return policy. Some stores no longer allow for returns with cash back, and only extend store credit with receipts, and some do not allow returns at all. They often will only take things back with the tags still attached as well so make sure it will work before you start removing the tags.

Always wash everything your buy even if it looks clean. You don’t know if it was in a dusty attic or if (worst case scenario) the previous owner had a bed bug infestation. Clothing should be washed in hot water as soon as it is brought home to make sure it is free and clear.

Speaking of washing, make sure you check out the care instructions on tags. Many times, people disregard a garment because they don’t have the time ot money to dry clean it all the time. Don’t get stuck with a garment you can’t properly care for.

Another reason to try things on before you buy; you can see stains and holes easier than when it is hanging on the rack. I can[‘t count how many times I have missed a big hole, stain or rip in a shirt or pants until I was in the dressing room.

Know brands. Don’t get conned into paying full price or more for something that is from Walmart. It helps to know some names of designer brands so you can know if something is a good deal or not.

What tips do you have for shopping at thrift stores for clothing? I would love to hear your tips!

A Day in The Life of This Blogger

a day in the life of a blogger

So, recently on Facebook, I found out what I kind of already know. People are unsure exactly what it is I do and how I do it and more importantly, how I make money doing it. While this really could be a novel in itself (there are many books on the subject actually!), I was asked if I could write a post on what a day is like for me as a blogger. I am flattered people are curious. I want to make it clear that this is not what every blogger does for their daily routine as there are many kinds of bloggers out there and there are as many niches as there are people who blog, but this is what a day is like for me, personally, as a blogger.

A Day in the Life of This Blogger

I will make it in as simple of terms as I can, but understand that it changes sometimes from day to day, but for illustration purposes, here is my usual schedule of things.

7:30 am is the time I wake up. Usually 7 days a week. Why 7:30? Well, my daughter gets up for school then m-f and i can’t sleep in much later than that because by 7:30 my time, it’s already nearly lunch on the East coast. The first thing I do is check my email. This can take anywhere from an hour to 2 hours depending on what is thrown at me. This includes time responding to emails about product reviews, reader questions and advertizing opportunities. I always have my email open because this is an ongoing thing all day.

While checking my email, I am often bouncing back and forth checking stats for traffic, analyzing the day before and checking how my promotion did on all my social media networks. I regularly have 5-6 tabs open on my computer, and often as many as 20. This is also a day long thing as I watch my stats for the day as well.

I am also a VA (Virtual assistant) which means I contribute to other blogs. I currently contribute to 3 others. I write posts for them and I usually have 1-2 post to write for one blog or the other of them daily, M-F. Writing a post usually takes about an hour to an hour and a half. This is including writing it, researching it, finding and editing a picture for it and editing the post itself adding in SEO (a way that search engines group or rank posts..its a long explanation, but this is the short version of explaining it), links, etc. Being a VA also means I need to try to be available to my clients as well.

stack of books

In between writing posts for my VA work, I am posting links I am promoting that day on social media as well as networking with other bloggers.

By now, it is around lunch time. I take a short break to eat usually. Like any person who needs to eat on the fly, this often means whatever quick meal I can rustle up in the kitchen.

After lunch, I usually start working on my editorial calendar. This means making sure I am set for the week on my own posts or doing projects such as making recipes, crafts, DIYs and so on. It sometimes means going to the store to buy supplies (including waiting in line for 20 minutes at Hobby Lobby like I did the other day). It means making sure I have things scheduled out. When doing projects such as making my own DIY things, recipe creation and crafts, there are sometimes mistakes and mishaps and I must start all over again to get it right.

I often take the afternoon to talk on the phone to my VA clients about their plans for their blogs and what role I will be playing as well as do training sessions, conference calls with businesses I am working with and follow up on emails.

Writing posts is not so much just sitting down and tapping my fingers away on the keyboard. Oddly, other than researching for the post, it is often the picture taking and editing that takes the most time. For a recipe, craft or DIY, I might take as many as 100 pictures at different angles of the same object staged in different ways. Staging means making the object look interesting, neat, eye catching or in the case of recipes, delicious. It means trying out different props with the photo and different backgrounds. When I finally get the images taken, it can take another hour or more to go through them all and pick one or two that are the best. Then comes the editing. I must fix the lighting, crop, resize, add words and effects. This whole process from start to finish can take a couple hours and I have gotten some odd looks from neighbors as I photograph some peanut butter on my balcony.

By now, it is usually dinner. I take a break to cook (and if the meal will be blogged about, this can take even longer because of pictures that need to be taken along the way and staging of the final product). My poor family has gotten used to drooling over dinner and watching me snap pictures of it in my light box or on my patio for 15 minutes or more before they can dig in. (My 11 year old has gotten so used to it, she asks, “Mama, are you blogging this or can we eat it now?”)

After dinner, I sometimes take a break for a minute to spend time with my family.

When the break is over, I often write extra posts, catch up on any emails I didn’t get to, do extra promotions, edit images and so on. I often don’t get to bed until midnight or later, daily. Sometimes things come up that keep me awake such as last minute posts I have been asked to do, last minute posts I decide to do and last minute promotional pushes.

This doesn’t even include what goes into a product review. Honestly, Lisa at Planet Weidknect explained that a lot better than I could have.

blogging

When I am not actually writing, taking pictures or editing, I am promoting on social media, talking with fans, managing my social media accounts, reading and commenting on other blogs (I love that bloggers are so community orientated. We love to support and help each other), researching blog topic ideas, brainstorming new content ideas, writing content posts I sell for my freelance work on the side and pitching/following up with clients and companies. All in all, I spend on average 10-12 hours a day online, most of it working, sometimes taking a mental break to play games or chat.

If you are wondering how I make money doing all of this, I make money from my VA clients, companies I promote and affiliate promotions. Occasionally, I do sponsored content. I am also able to support my family with the “free” products I receive for review such as gift cards to restaurants, cleaning products, clothes, home decor, household products and so on. I only promote products and companies I fully believe in and that value me and what I do. I consider it part of my integrity.

The work is long, a huge numbers game, full of deadlines and can be mentally taxing, but, I absolutely love it. It is my passion. I have found success in it in no way I thought I could. I have made amazing friends. I do it because I like to help people. I love to inspire others and I love to make a connection. I can do it in my PJs if I choose and I am my own boss and If I am organized enough about it, I can occasionally take a day off. Also, I take time some time to run errands like a normal person does when I need to. 😉 Keep in mind, I am also a stay at home mom, so I while I take breaks to play with my daughter and help with homework and tuck in at night, I am lucky because my daughter is a pre-teen. Many bloggers do all of this that I do with toddlers clinging to them and a baby bouncing on the knee.

So there you have it. A day in the life of THIS blogger. :)

Bloggers, what is a day in the life of a blogger for you? I would love it if you shared posts about your blogging journey!

Value Village Shopping Tips

Value Village Shopping Tips

When I lived in Missoula, there was only the Goodwill as far as chain thrift stores. I moved the Spokane, WA at the beginning of August last year and immediately sought out thrift stores. I fell in love with the Value Village. It is a chain thrift store that donates money to local causes and charities and I would much rather support them than the Good will any day after hearing about some unsavory things having to do with how the Goodwill runs their operations.

Being that I shop at the Value Village on a weekly basis, (sometimes more than once!) I thought I would share some of my tips for shopping there.

Value Village Shopping Tips

Make sure you check out their website. You can often find DIY ideas from Halloween costumes to refurbishing furniture tips. I find the website is a great place to check out some fun articles as well as info about the stores.

Join the SuperSavers Club. It’s free and it is your pass to great savings. It allows you to get 50% deals on clothes, shoes and even books during special sales that happen almost every month. Plus, there are sometimes pre-sales to ones that are offered to the public that only SuperSavers Club cardholders get. You will also get emails about the special sales coming up. SuperSavers also save 20% on their birthdays! Just don’t try to join on a sale day. Many times, it will be against their policy.

Get there early in the day to get the best chance at getting a great item on sale days. While they do put new items out all day long, you want the best shot at getting the newest stuff to hit the shelves as soon as they open. Plus, sale days tend to be crowded, so hit up the racks before they do.

Donate items to them. They give you a tax write off in most states and sometimes, they have extra deals like getting 30% off your next purchase or donation punch-cards that get you super discounts.

Make sure to pay attention to the color on the tag. On Non-big sale days, they often have sales on the tags. There is usually a different color each week, so make sure you ask what the color is when you come into the store. These get you 50% off all tags of that color in all departments, not just clothing like with many of their sales.

Shop off season. I have noticed that many off season items such as sandals in the winter and hats in the summer are on sale during off season times. They may not be marked on sale, but the prices are often lower than if you try to buy them during the season.

Get their book bargains. At Value Village, if you buy 4 books, you get the 5th for free. However, make sure they are all around the same price to get the best deal.

Go on discount days. On Wednesday, for example, Seniors get 20% off. Take your favorite grandma shopping on this day!

What are some of your tips for shopping at the Value Village?

This post was NOT SPONSORED by Value Village. I just really love it there!

Campus Book Rentals are a Student’s Best Friend

CampusBookRentals.com has compensated me for the following post. This notice is in line with the FTC’s regulations regarding compensation in online advertizements. All opinions are my own and CampusBookRentals.com did not tell me what to write.

I have written about CampusBookRentals.com before. I have shared the many reasons I love them from their easy rentals and the ability to borrow textbooks at an incredibly discounted price and free shipping both ways. Now, you can also rent your books to other students and make back more than you would in the typical buy back programs offered by the school you attend.

I haven’t talked much about one of the biggest reasons I love Campus Book Rentals. Did you know they generously donate to Operation Smile?

Operation Smile is a program that helps fix children’s smiles and more importantly gives them a chance to thrive who otherwise wouldn’t. Every 3 minutes a child is born with what is called a cleft pallet. In impoverished countries around the world, the parents of these children would not be able to pay for the life-saving surgery that their children need and Operation Smile steps in to help them.

798px-Operationsmilebig

A cleft palette is not on only a noticeable physical disfigurement to these children’s smile, but it can mean they do not survive at all because of the lack of being able to get proper nutrition and nourishment. Infants are unable to latch for something as simple as breastfeeding. Fixing the cleft pallet will change all of that for them.

Operations Smile’s surgeons and team is all volunteer-based, but the money to do the actual surgeries is costly. With the donations that CampusBookRentals.com and countless other folks give, the surgeries are possible and many lives are forever changed and saved.

I love supporting a company that does this sort of humanitarian charity donation. It means a lot to me to support and promote such wonderful companies that not only offer amazing services for students, but care about the world around them.

You can find more information on Operation Smile on their website. Visit RentBack.com to rent your used textbooks to other students and CampusbookRentals.com to rent for your next semester.

Saving On Electronic Media

Media and electronics are a big part of today’s world. TV, cell phones, computers and such are how we stay in touch, pay bills and do our jobs.

tv1-2
Saving on these expenses can really soften the blow on your budget.

In this post, I will share some simple ways you can save on electronic bills without feeling deprived of your entertainment and communication.

For cell phone services, shop around. There are so many companies out there now and they all want your business. Because of this, you are at a great advantage as a consumer. Always shop around and compare prices. Think about how many minutes you reasonably use and don’t get talked into plans that don’t fit that.

Get a pre-paid cell phone. Avoid fees associated with early contract termination by using a cell phone that has a pre-paid option. Many plans are cheaper than the ones you would get in a provider’s store.

If you have teens or a child with a cell phone, accept that they love to text and buy a plan that gives them unlimited texts. If you go over, you could be paying 10-20 or even 50 cents per text, so play it safe on your wallet and just go for an unlimited plan.

Consider if you actually need a landline. You could save hundreds a year by just getting rid of it.

Use services such as Skype for long calling. It’s a free service for US calls and works great for long distance relatives to stay in touch.

Call your cable company on a regular basis and ask about specials they may be running that you can take advantage of. They may not tell you about them otherwise.

Try a VOIP service for your landline. For one low fee per year, you can make and receive calls through your computer’s internet connection.

For downloads such as music, books and other digital media, look for free ones where you can. Radio stations often give out free downloads on their websites and there are hundreds of free books available on Amazon for free.

If you are a senior or college student, ask for discounts on service for cell phones and internet.
