Teaching Tweens about Money budgeting and life insurance

When I was in my 20’s I made a lot of financial mistakes. It was no one’s fault but my own, however I sometimes wish I would have had some more formal conversations about budgeting either at home or in school when I was my daughter’s age and older.

My daughter is 12 and I think now is the perfect time to talk to her about the importance of budgeting as well as the importance of protecting her financial future both in the long term and short term. I am very protective of her financial future when it comes to giving her the tools to succeed. Here are some ways that we talk about finances, life insurance and her future.

How to Teach Tweens About Money, Budgeting and Life Insurance

Talk about the importance of credit. This was one place I really messed up. I thought that since I was being offered credit cards, it must mean I should take all of them. I am embarrassed to say I took out too many and this ruined my credit in a large way. You don’t have to go deeply in depth about credit at this age, but it should be mentioned in passing to prepare for bigger conversations down the road.

teaching kids about budgets

Open a bank account for your preteen. Many banks and financial institutions have bank account programs made just for kids this age. They often include free classes for kids that teach them about finances as well as high savings interest.

kids and budgets

Allow your preteen to get in on your household budget plans. Show them how you budget and how you plan for things like savings and big purchases. The best way to teach your child how to budget is to lead by example. If your preteen is older like mine is, a good exercise is to allow them to create a small portion of the budget such as the weekly entertainment one or or make it a game to find money in the budget for a fun family outing.

how to teach kids about money

Help your preteen create their own mini-budget. If your child gets allowance, birthday money or babysitting money, help them create a budget with it. Don’t try to be too controlling as saving for something big should be their choice and the budget should allow for some flexibility just like your own does. You also want to give your child a chance to make some mistakes so they can learn from them early on.

How to teach tweens about money

Lead by example. Protecting your family’s financial future is more than just savings and watching your credit score. It can be things you do to protect it should something happen to you. Talk to your child about the importance of things like life insurance, home insurance and investments like stocks and bonds. This may be a difficult conversation to have, but it should be stressed that it is important.

By the way, I found a great website with more information on being protective of your financial future.

Elderberry Blueberry Fruit Leather

Thank you to Norm's Farms for sending me a selection of their delicious Elderberry products to try in my home for a review. All opinions and words are my own.
Elderberry Blueberry Fruit Leather recipe for giving yourself or your kids an antioxidant boost. Easy to make fruit leather recipe using elderberry syrup.

When I first started making some of my own snacks here at the house (granola bars are my specialty), I just know I would have to figure out a way to create fruit snacks and fruit leather. I already made jerky in the oven, so I figured I could probably employ my oven again to be a dehydrator. I wanted to include elderberry into my recipe because it has so many benefits and with spring on it’s way, I want to give my body what it needs to stay healthy. I like to make my healthy food and make it “junk” or at least trick myself into thinking it is so I made these Elderberry Blueberry Fruit Leathers.

homemade fruit rollups

Benefits of Elderberries

Elderberries contain a high amount of antioxidants. They actually contain a higher amount than blueberries, tart cherry and even goji berry. This makes it great to take to give your body a health boost*.

My elderberry fruit leather contains both elderberries and blueberries so it has an extra boost for health*.

how to use elderberry syrup

I chose to use the Norm’s Farms Elderberry Wellness Syrup rather than just plain elderberry syrup because it contains some extra ingredients like cinnamon, honey and cloves and I thought not only would it give the fruit leather some goodness, but it would add an extra element of flavor and subtle sweetness. I appreciate Norm’s Farm for sending me their product to try because Norm’s Farm stand by making sure they are sustainable and natural in their growing and manufacturing process and I really stand by them for that. I did try the syrup on it’s own and it is absolutely delicious. My whole family loves it, actually.

Elderberry Fruit Leather

Ingredients
  • 4 Cups Unsweetened Apple Sauce
  • 2 Cups Fresh Blueberries
  • 3 Tbsp Norm's Farms Elderberry Wellness Syrup
Instructions
  1. Add your apple sauce to a high power blender such as a Ninja or a Vitamix.
  2. Pour in your blueberries and turn on to pulverize them. When that is well mixed, add your Norm's Farm Elderberry Wellness Syrup and mix again.
  3. Line 2 jelly roll pans with parchment paper. Pour your mixture onto them and using a spatula, spread evenly to ¼ of an inch thick or less. The thicker you leave it, the longer it will take in the oven, so you want it thin, but not so thin that you can see through it.
  4. Turn your oven onto the "warm" setting. Place your pans inside and leave on for 4-6 hours. They are done when they start to pull away from the paper and are no longer sticky or wet feeling.

6 New Frugal Ways to Go Green in 2015

6 New Frugal Ways to Go Green in 2015- these tips for new frugal ways to go green easy, low cost and different than what you are probably already doing.

If you have been reading my blog for a while, you know that living as green as I can in my everyday life is extremely important to me. You can call me “crunchy”, a “hippie” or even a green nut, and I will accept all of those labels. The funniest part about who I am becoming now is just a few years ago, I wasn’t really all that Eco-conscious. It wasn’t that I didn’t care; it was that I thought going green in my life was just something I either could not afford or something that would be too hard to do.

I am here to tell you that I was wrong on both fronts and now I look for new ways to go green in my life every step of the way. If you are on a green journey like me, you may be running out of ideas on where else you could go green that is practical and frugal. Here are 10 new ways to go green in 2015 to inspire you to make just a few more small changes. Each one of these ideas is easy, cheap and in some cases, even free and I bet there is at least one or two things on here that you are not doing and hadn’t even thought of.

ways to go green

6 New Frugal Ways to Go Green in 2015

1. Change up your batteries. I wrote a post a while back about things you should never throw away and batteries was one of them. However, you CAN recycle batteries and Energizer used them to create their new EcoAdvanced battery line. (Can you believe that Energizer, the leader in battery innovation, is the first company in the world to create new, long-lasting batteries out of old ones?! In fact, these are Energizer’s longest-lasting alkaline batteries yet so this means less waste, too!) I go through a lot of batteries here and these batteries were not only right up my alley with their smart green technology, but they were less than $5 for a 4 pack of AA’s at Walmart. I struggled to find them a bit, but eventually, I found them in the photo department. They also come in AAA as well. For more information on this new line, check out BringingInnovation.net

How to go green

2. Limit what you throw away. This not only keeps waste down, but if you are consciously watching what is going in the trash you are likely to by less, too if you know some of the packaging will go to waste. Before we starting living a more Eco-conscious lifestyle, we were taking out a trash bag from our kitchen about every day or 2. Now, we are down to less that 2 times per week. This is because when I am purchasing things, I pay attention to packaging. One way to reduce you packaging is to buy in bulk. I save so much money this way, too.

3. Clean fridge coils, vents around your house and your computer vents on a regular basis. When these are full of dust bunnies, not only is it unhealthy for your air quality, but it forces your appliances and electronics to work harder that nessisary. This in turn steals electricity that is not needed and causes your stuff to wear out quicker leading to more waste in landfills.

4. Make a commitment to always buy one thing that is sustainable. Most people buy what they can where they can when it comes to sustainably farmed and organic foods and materials. While there is nothing wrong with this, this year, try making a commitment to buy ONE thing sustainable or organic (or both!) no matter what. For me, that is milk. We always buy this and make room in our budget to do so. It doesn’t have to cost a lot either. We get dairy in awesome glass bottles from our local co-op for less than $4 for a half gallon and when we return the glass bottles, we get $1 back, so it’s actually only $3. That is close to “regular” milk prices!

sustainable dairy

5. Give up paper towels and napkins no matter where you are. You may already do this at home, but it may have not dawned on you to do this out and about. Don’t take napkins at restaurants and if you wash your hand in a public bathroom, is it really that bad to just dry your hands on your pants? Using a towel or an air dryer is wasteful, after all, whether it is at home or out and about. If you feel the need to, try carrying a small washcloth with you in your purse for drying your hands or using as a napkin.

6. Find ways to make your favorite convenience foods and snacks. This may seem more like a money saying tip than an Eco-friendly one, but making your own convenience foods can help you not waste packaging and this in turn saves our environment and the waste most people create. Individually wrapped snacks are the worst when it comes to waste of this kind. Try making these hemp flax-seed granola bars, for instance.

What to Use Instead of Plastic

How to Cut Your Use of Plastic

What to Use Instead of Plastic

What to Use Instead of Plastic- Practical things to buy to replace the plastic in your life. Reusable grocery bags, reusable produce bags and glass straws.

I recently wrote a post on cutting your use of plastic, but after I saw a documentary on Netflix over the weekend about the Great Pacific Garbage Patch called Plastic Paradise, I felt I needed to not only give you ideas on how to cut plastic but some actual products you could purchase in order to break you plastic habit. These items are not only BPA free because they contain no plastic but are low cost and should be of higher quality than any plastic product you currently use at home. Here are some awesome products to use instead of plastic.

What to Use Instead of Plastic

Plastic Drinking Straws

PL1

These Glass Straws work just as good as the plastic kind and they are washable and reusable. If you are scared of using glass around your little ones, try these Stainless Steel ones. These straws even come with brushes for cleaning them.

Plastic Food Storage Containers

plastic alternatives

Instead of plastic food containers for leftovers, use these Glass storage containers. This set contains no BPA and is made with Limestone and other natural components. True there is some Silica, but it is much better than plastic. One bonus to using glass storage containers for food is they don’t stain like plastic does.

Plastic Sandwich Bags

cloth bags

Instead of using these for packing yours and your child’s lunches, try these chic and colorful reusable cloth sandwich bags that can be washed and used over and over.

Plastic Water Bottles

reuseable water bottle

One of the things that hit me the most about the show Plastic Paradise was how many plastic water bottles are tossed each day. Stop the waste and still enjoy bottled water with these stainless steel water bottles.

Plastic Shopping Bags

reusable shopping bags

This one is a given and most people know that you can do this to cut plastic, but I really like this version of reusable bags. It features pockets in it for bottles and small stuff so it doesn’t get crushed and makes it easy to carry. Plus it is made of easy to wash organic cotton.

Plastic Produce Bags

reusable produce bags

Instead of using the plastic produce bags at the store, bring your own. These reusable produce bags are washable and easy to use at the store. Some stores even offer a discount for using them!

Plastic Storage for Bulk Items

glass jar

Rather than organize your bulk items in plastic, why not get some great looking glass jars to store them in? There are some great labels out there now, too as well as nice looking jars themselves out side of just masons.

The Truth about Free-Range Eggs

The Truth about Free-Range Eggs including facts on all egg carton labeling for consumers, misleading egg labels and where to get free-range eggs.

When I started to be a more conscious consumer a couple of years ago, I started by making small changes in my diet, lifestyle and the things I did. One of the very first things I did was start small in my grocery shopping. I started with dairy and eggs since they were used very frequently here and the cost to make the switch was not as much as it was to buy grass-fed beef. I was happy to see these eggs in cartons in regular stores that made my little green living heart jump. The hippie in me rejoiced to not be buying “tortured eggs” anymore. As I started to look into what these labels meant, a dark side of them started to come out. I want to share with you the truth about egg labels and what it means to you, the consumer.

The Truth About Free-Range Eggs

As you will see from many egg cartons in the store that there are several labels companies like to put on their product to get you to buy it. Some of these labels are laughable at best and some are pretty much lies. Here are some of the things you may see on egg cartons at your local store and what it really means.

‘Free-Range’- This pretty much means nothing as it is not a regulated label such as ‘organic’ is. All a company has to do to be able to place this label on eggs is to allow chickens access to fresh air outdoors. This doesn’t always mean they get to go outside an peck at the country side. It often means they get a very small concrete or dust floor that is enclosed to get fresh air.

‘Farm Fresh’- This means pretty much squat. ALL chicken eggs come from farms because after all, factory farms are still farms.

‘Cage Free’- Similar to ‘Free Range’ this means that the birds may not live in wire cases per say, but they most likely live in a large enclosure with thousands of other birds with very little space.

‘Vegetarian fed’- This is one that is confusing and laughable. You see, chickens are NOT vegetarians. They eat bugs. This means they are omnivores. So why would feeding a chicken a vegetarian diet be good for them if it’s not their natural diet?

‘Hormone Free’- This is one one those labels that also makes me giggle because it’s like “Thank you captain obvious”. Since it is illegal to give hormones to poultry in the US, I would hope all eggs are hormone free here in the US.

Where to Get Actual Free-Range Eggs

The best bet for you if you are looking for some real fresh from the farm happy chicken eggs is to either raise them yourselves (many cities even allow for a few backyard chickens) or make friends with a framer or someone who raises them. You can often also get them at your local co-op or farmer’s market. Not only is this good for you, the chickens and your family, you are also supporting local farming efforts which is great for the environment.

12 Green Bloggers tell you how to go green right now

On my blog, I talk a lot about living a sustainable and Eco-friendly lifestyle. I give tips on how to have a green home and even how to green your cleaning routine. 12 Green Bloggers Tell You How to Go Green Right Now

I asked all the bloggers this same question:

“What is the #1 tip or piece of advice you have for someone considering going green at home? What is one way they can do it right now? What are some things everyone can do?”

Here are their answers!

a cloth life

Mary Ann of A Cloth Life:

I think the most important thing to remember is that you do not have to change everything. Small things can make a difference, too. Don’t overwhelm yourself. Just pick one or two areas to make some easy eco-conscious changes.

Cleaning
Most of my household cleaning products have been replaced in one form our another with some combination of white vinegar + (water, oil, dish soap, etc depending on what I’m needing to clean). I use dollar store spray bottles with my “recipes” written in permanent marker on the side, then keep this bottles stored under my sink like any other cleaning product would be. You can easily find these recipes through Pinterest or whichever search engine you prefer.

Try replacing dryer sheets with wool dryer balls. When your laundry is done, you just keep them in the dryer for the next load!

By making small changes, it’s less of a shock, feels like less of a burden, and still adds up to a simple, eco-friendly lifestyle. You’ll also be surprised how easy it is to continue adding on with more small changes.

Happy Kids

Meg at Happy Kids, Inc.

Although it may seem hard to always have a “green sensibility”, there is one easy step I have found to make a huge impact on our Earth: buy a stainless steel reusable water bottle. I have one, as does my husband and three children. I never go anywhere without them. Whether it’s out running errands, in school lunches, traveling on a plane, or doing activities, we always bring our bottles along. You won’t be forced to buy wasteful bottled water at places like airports and sporting events. You also aren’t leaching harsh chemicals often found in plastic water bottles when you go stainless. Bonus: you will probably find yourself drinking more water, which is so good for you.

Little Bits of Granola

Laura at Little Bits of Granola

The thing I like to emphasize is that “going green” does not have to be all or nothing and it doesn’t have to be weird, hard, or expensive. My advice is keep it simple. Start small and do things that make sense for you. If you are overwhelmed, try picking one area of impact to focus on. For example, you might focus on doing things that save money first, or you might focus on things that have the biggest impact on your health, like food and personal care products. Once you get the hang of that, start branching out.

Two a Beautiful Life

Have an organized computer management system. Many people do not hesitate to print things out to keep for later or to reference but I cut back on my printing needs by taking lots of screenshots and organizing that information into folders that I can access easily later. Apps like Evernote are helpful for this, since you can organize your pictures by folders and access them on different devices just by logging in. It is also helpful to have a desktop scanner, so you can scan all those pesky papers (you’ll probably lose later!) and put them right in the recycling after filing.

Simplify Live Love

Michelle at Simplify Live Love

I’m excited to share my #1 tip for going green at home with you today: spend 15 more minutes each day in the kitchen, as I really believe we really are what we eat. Americans spend the least amount of time cooking compared with many other countries and are some of the unhealthiest people in the world – we can combat that in the kitchen. Start buying more whole foods and make a commitment to shop the perimeter of the grocery store. Drop the processed junk for just ONE week and see how you feel! I know we’re all busy people and we don’t have eight hours a day to cook, so find quick, easy, wholesome, and delicious recipes your family will love {like the ones I share on Simplify, Live, Love } and spend a bit more time in the kitchen each day. That’s my #1 tip for going green!

Make, Mend, Grow

Raina at Make, Mend, Grow

Going green can be hard, but it’s not impossible when you start small! An easy change for me was to switch from harsh cleaners to using vinegar and baking soda. Since some jobs are a little more tough than others, I use citrus essential oils. For a cheap and easy way to get the citrus oils in your vinegar, take citrus peels and throw them in a large mason jar and cover with plain white vinegar. Let it steep for a couple of weeks, remove the peels and you have a great smelling cleaner. Even better tip? When you’re done with the steeped peels, run them through your garbage disposal to clean the disposal and keep your sink smelling nice! Remember, every small change helps!

Moms Confession

Kristi at Moms Confession

Going green when it comes to cleaning my home is probably one of the easiest and best things I have done for my family. We have been on this journey for about a year and while we are not 100% green, it’s great knowing that we are well on our way to living a greener lifestyle.

Instead of jumping in with both feet, I chose to take the slow and steady approach. By using this method, going green at home has taken the “green cleaning costs more and green cleaning takes more time” myths out of the mix. If you are looking to start going green at home, take baby steps into your new lifestyle. Living a greener lifestyle doesn’t have to be something you take on 100% in one shot. By simply starting with making one homemade cleaner recipe at home or purchasing one at the store is a small step into living the life you dream of…a greener, cleaner life!

Metta Cultura

Marissa at Metta Cultura

The number one piece of advice that I have for someone who is wanting to go green is to know the reason why you are doing it. You have to make sure that the reason is a strong one because you want to be sure to stick with it. One way you can start now is to unplug appliances that you aren’t using. It doesn’t require much time or effort. It just requires habit. Something that everyone can do is recycle: reused store-bought container for food storage, try to find a recycle program in your area, or sign up on recyclebank.com to earn incentives for your recycling efforts.

My UnEntitled Life

Dina at My UnEntitled Life

My one piece of advice that anyone can do and start today is to quit buying dryer sheets. Wool balls are so effective at keeping the clothes soft and they last so much longer. I received my dryer balls over 18 months ago and they’re still going strong. Throw in a piece of aluminum foil to get the static out and you’re good to go. The dryer sheets are so bad on the environment and on us because they’re neurotoxins.

If you are making a purchase for your home based on time and budget (and most of us do!) here are a couple of quick tips to make the air in your home healthier.

· Carpets, vinyls and upholstered furniture are among the worst “off-gassers” of toxic fumes. If you install something new, properly air the room out for 3-7 days. The greatest amount of gases are released in the first few days which can make a huge difference to your home’s air quality.

· When you buy paint, ask about low VOC (volatile organic compounds) options. These healthier paints today are just as durable and no more expensive than other quality paints.

· If you are replacing a mattress, consider natural latex. You spend so much time in bed that the air you breathe while you sleep is critical, especially for children.

Crystal at Eccentric Eclectic Woman

My #1 tip or piece of advice I have for someone considering going green at home is to minimize waste. One way to do this right now is to think about everything that you are bringing home, whether it be from the coffee shop or the grocery store, and look at the packaging. If it has packaging that can be reused, recycled, or repurposed it is a good investment because it will not end up in the landfill. Alternatively you can bring your own reusable bags and containers from home to use while you are out, so that you don’t contribute to the waste problem. This is very simple and will help you along the path of going green.

Recycle! The easiest way to get started is get a small can to keep right next to your regular trash can, so instead of throwing away plastic, glass, or metal you can easily recycle instead. Then find out what type of programs are available in your town/city to take the next steps.
