Activated charcoal is everywhere these days. It used to just be used for detoxing the inside, (its’ actually what they put in your stomach in the ER in cases of poisoning) but now, people are seeing that it can have benefits for detoxing skin and can be used for whole body care. I discovered activated charcoal a couple of years ago and started using it to whiten my teeth. Now, I have used it in several DIY recipes for my skin and always have some on hand. I love activated charcoal because it really does make my skin feel better and it has helped with issues such as oiliness.
If you are trying to figure out what activated charcoal is, WedMD defines it as:
Charcoal is made from coal, wood, or other substances. It becomes “activated charcoal” when high temperatures combine with a gas or activating agent to expand its surface area.
So basically, yes, you are using regular charcoal that has been ‘activated’ so it can absorb toxins. It’s pretty amazing stuff an super soft. Because of this, it is excellent for use in many cosmetic applications. I should warn you though, it can be VERY MESSY so make sure if you do any of these DIYs listed, you cover your work space.
You can buy Activated Charcoal here. A little goes a long way so this bag will last through many fun recipes:
